THE PROFESSION
How to get RevOps certified, and how to judge whether it is worth it
Revenue operations has no licensing body. No exam is required to practise, nothing is protected, and anyone may issue a certificate. That makes the question 'which certification' less useful than the question 'what does this one actually assess'.
In a licensed profession the credential carries the authority — a licence to practise medicine means something specific because a body with legal standing says so. Revenue operations has nothing equivalent, and is unlikely to. So a RevOps certificate is not a licence. It is evidence, and evidence is only as strong as the test that produced it.
This matters practically, because the certifications available differ enormously in what they demand. Some are a few hours of video followed by a multiple-choice exam you can retake immediately. Others assess reasoning under ambiguity. Both produce a line on a LinkedIn profile, and only one of them survives a hiring manager asking a follow-up question.
What actually exists
Four categories, described by what they are for rather than ranked. They are not substitutes for each other.
HubSpot Academy — Revenue Operations Certification
VENDOR ACADEMY · FREEA vendor-published certification covering revenue operations concepts alongside the HubSpot platform. The best-known credential in the category and the one most hiring managers will have seen.
Strength. Free, well produced, and genuinely useful if your organisation runs on HubSpot. There is no argument for skipping it.
Limit. It is marketing for a platform, and it is free, which means it is also ubiquitous. A credential that almost everyone applying has does not differentiate an application — it only hurts to be missing it.
Community and cohort programmes
COMMUNITY · VARIESPractitioner communities such as RevOps Co-op run courses and cohort programmes, typically taught by working operators.
Strength. The network is frequently worth more than the certificate. Cohort formats create peers who refer you to roles.
Limit. Assessment rigour varies widely and is often participation-based. Check whether anything is actually graded before pricing it as a credential rather than as a course.
Independent certification bodies
THIRD PARTY · PAIDA small number of independent bodies issue revenue operations credentials with a formal assessment.
Strength. Platform-neutral, which matters if you expect to work across CRMs rather than inside one vendor's ecosystem.
Limit. Recognition is the open question. Verify that the credential has a public verification URL, or it is unverifiable to the person you are showing it to.
Adjacent platform certifications
VENDOR ACADEMY · VARIESSalesforce, Marketo and similar administrator or consultant credentials. Not RevOps certifications, but frequently treated as proxies.
Strength. Deep, well-established, and hiring managers trust them because the exams are genuinely difficult.
Limit. They certify a product, not a discipline. They say nothing about whether you can design a process, choose a metric or govern a field.
Four questions that separate a credential from a completion badge
- 1
Is the assessment graded, and can you fail it?
A certificate awarded for finishing is a record of attendance. If there is no passing score, or unlimited immediate retakes with the same question set, the credential is telling a hiring manager that you watched something.
- 2
Are the answers public?
If the question bank is world-readable — and on a surprising number of platforms it effectively is — the exam measures whether you can read, not whether you can reason. Ask where the answer key lives.
- 3
Is there a verification URL a third party can check?
A credential nobody can verify is a claim, not a credential. It should resolve to a public page showing the holder, the issue date and whether it is still valid, without the checker needing an account.
- 4
Does it test the product or the discipline?
Platform knowledge depreciates on the vendor's release schedule — a certification in a product you leave behind is worth very little at the next company. Judgement about ownership, process design, measurement and governance transfers across every stack you will ever work in.
WHERE THIS FAILS
A certification is not a substitute for demonstrated work, and treating it as one is the most common mistake we see. In a discipline with no degree pathway, hiring managers screen on evidence. A credential moves you past the first filter; an audit you actually ran is what gets you the offer.
We issue one of these, so treat the criteria above as a position rather than as neutral reporting. They are the criteria we built ours against, stated openly so you can hold us to them — including the two we would fail if we cut corners, which are the public answer key and the verification URL. Our editorial standard is published at /editorial-standards.
Recognition lags rigour. A harder, better-designed assessment from a less well-known issuer may do less for you at the screening stage than a free, ubiquitous one. That is an unfair fact about the market rather than a reason to pick the weaker credential, but it is worth knowing before you choose only one.
RevOps Certified — our credential
Assessed on judgement rather than platform trivia, with a public verification page, a LinkedIn-ready entry and a downloadable certificate. It is built against the four criteria above. $2,500, bought separately from a membership.
COMMON QUESTIONS
- Is a RevOps certification worth it?
- It depends entirely on what the certification assesses. Revenue operations has no licensing body, so a certificate carries no inherent authority — it is worth exactly what its assessment is worth. A credential that tests whether you can find a setting in a product proves you can find a setting in a product. One that tests whether you can decide which system owns a field, or what a metric hides, is evidence of judgement. Ask what the assessment contains before asking what it costs.
- What is the best RevOps certification?
- There is no single answer, because they are not competing on the same axis. If your organisation runs on HubSpot, the free HubSpot Academy certification is the obvious first step and there is no reason not to take it. If you need a platform-neutral credential that demonstrates reasoning rather than product knowledge, you need one with a graded assessment and a public verification page. Most people in the discipline end up holding both a vendor credential and something broader.
- Do I need a certification to get a RevOps job?
- No. Revenue operations hires overwhelmingly on demonstrated work, because there is no degree pathway and no licence. A certification helps at the screening stage, where a recruiter is filtering a list and has nothing else to filter on. What converts an interview is evidence: an audit you ran, a process you redesigned, a forecast you made more accurate. The credential gets you read; the work gets you hired.
- How long does it take to get RevOps certified?
- Vendor academy certifications are typically a few hours of video and a multiple-choice exam. A credential assessed on judgement takes longer, because the assessment is harder to pass without the underlying capability. The honest framing is that the certificate takes hours and the capability takes months — and only one of those is what a hiring manager is actually buying.
