Progressive Profiling
Asking for a little more information each time someone returns, instead of everything at once. Trades a slower profile for a materially higher completion rate.
What it is
A progressive form shows fields the visitor has not already answered. First visit asks for email and name; the next asks for company size; the one after asks about their CRM. The form stays short every time while the record fills out over several interactions.
The trade
Every additional field costs completions. Progressive profiling does not remove that cost, it spreads it — you learn less about a one-time visitor and considerably more about a returning one, which is usually the right way round, because the returning visitor is the one worth qualifying.
Where it fails
Anonymous visitors: it depends on cookie-based recognition. New device, cleared cookies, or a different person at the same company all reset it.
Single-touch assets: if most people convert once and never return, the queue never advances and you have simply asked for less.
Over-long queues: a queue of fifteen fields is a plan to never finish. Decide what actually changes a routing or qualification decision, and stop there.
Enrichment is often the better answer
Firmographics — company size, industry, revenue band — are frequently available from an enrichment provider given only a domain. Asking a human to type what a vendor can supply spends a completion to learn something you could have bought.

Data Enrichment Waterfall
Querying multiple data providers in sequence, using the next only where the previous returned nothing, to raise coverage without paying for duplicate lookups.
Lead Scoring
A model assigning a numeric value to leads based on fit and behaviour, so attention goes to the ones most likely to convert.
Demand Generation
The discipline of creating awareness and interest in a category and a product, as distinct from capturing demand that already exists.
COMMON QUESTIONS
- Does progressive profiling improve conversion?
- It improves per-form completion by keeping forms short. Whether it improves the funnel depends on how many visitors return — with few repeat visits you gather less data for the same traffic.
- How many progressive fields should a form have?
- Two or three visible at a time, and a queue short enough to complete in a handful of visits. Anything longer is a queue that never resolves.
- Progressive profiling or enrichment?
- Enrichment for anything derivable from the domain. Reserve the form for what only the person can tell you: their timeline, their budget, what they are actually trying to fix.
