Economic Buyer

The person who can authorise the spend — not who recommends it, and not who signs the paperwork, but who controls the budget decision.

The distinction that gets blurred

A champion advocates. A decision maker influences. The economic buyer can commit the funds. These are frequently different people, and recording a champion's name in an economic-buyer field is the most common way a deal looks better qualified than it is.

The test

Could this person approve the spend without asking anyone else? If the honest answer is 'they would need to take it to someone', you have not met the economic buyer yet.

Finding them without guessing

  1. Ask how purchases of this size get approved here. Process questions are answered readily; 'are you the decision maker' is not.

  2. Ask who signed off on the last comparable purchase, and what that process looked like.

  3. Map the approval chain as steps with names, and note where it leaves the department.

  4. Ask your champion who could stop this. The blockers are usually named more readily than the approver.

When you cannot reach them

Not reaching the economic buyer is itself information. It usually means the champion lacks the standing they claimed, the purchase is smaller in the buyer's mind than in yours, or the process has not really started.

Reflect it in the forecast rather than hoping. A deal with a mapped and met economic buyer and one without are not the same deal, however similar the rest of the qualification looks.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Who is the economic buyer?
The person who can authorise the spend without needing anyone else's approval. Not the person most enthusiastic, and not always the most senior — the test is whether they can say yes and have it stick.
How do you identify the economic buyer?
Ask directly how a purchase of this size gets approved, and who has signed off on comparable purchases recently. Titles are unreliable; the approval path is not.
What if you cannot reach them?
That is a finding, not a detail. A deal where the economic buyer has never been met carries a materially higher slip risk, and the forecast should reflect that rather than assuming a champion can carry it.
Is the economic buyer the same as the decision maker?
Not necessarily. Several people can shape the decision; usually one can release the money. Conflating them is what makes a deal look better qualified than it is.
