Outbound Sales
Manufacturing pipeline by initiating contact with accounts that have not raised their hand.
What determines whether it works
Three things, in order: whether the list is genuinely the right accounts, whether the message names a problem they actually have now, and whether the timing coincides with something that makes it urgent. Volume is fourth and cannot compensate for the first three.
The failure mode that looks like effort
Building it on something
Start from the ICP derived from outcome data, not from a firmographic query. The qualifying conditions are what make a list a list.
Find a trigger — a funding round, a hire, a technology change, a regulatory date — that makes now different from six months ago.
Write for one segment at a time. A message that fits every account on the list fits none of them.
Measure at the pipeline level on a creation cohort, and track domain health as a cost.
What to watch
Reply rate is an input, not an outcome. High replies with low pipeline means the message is interesting and unqualified.
Deliverability degrades quietly. Track it as an asset you are spending, because that is what volume outbound does to it.
Conversion of outbound-sourced against inbound-sourced. A large persistent gap is a list or message finding, not an effort one.
RELATED TERMS
Multi-Threading
Building relationships with several stakeholders in a buying account rather than relying on one contact.
Buyer Intent
Signals suggesting an account is actively researching a purchase, drawn from on-site behaviour or third-party data.
Sales-Led Growth
A motion where a sales team drives acquisition: prospects are qualified, guided through evaluation, and closed by people.
Ideal Customer Profile (ICP)
The definition of the accounts your product serves best, grounded in the observed characteristics of customers who buy quickly, stay, and expand.
COMMON QUESTIONS
- What is outbound sales?
- Initiating contact with prospects who have not raised their hand — cold email, calls, social, direct mail. Distinct from inbound, where the prospect makes the first move.
- Does outbound still work?
- Where the list is well defined and the message is specific to a real, current problem. Volume-based outbound into a loose list works badly and gets worse each year as filtering improves.
- How should outbound be measured?
- On qualified pipeline that converts, on a creation cohort. Activity counts and reply rates are inputs; measuring on them produces activity and replies rather than revenue.
- What is the most common outbound mistake?
- Scaling volume before establishing relevance. Doubling the send rate on a list that converts poorly doubles the cost and the domain damage, not the pipeline.
