Quota Attainment
The proportion of quota a rep achieved, and across a team, the distribution of that proportion.
The measure and its summary
Actual revenue against assigned target, per seller, per period. The headline is usually reported as an average, which is the least informative summary available.
Report the distribution
What to report instead
Share of sellers at or above target — the single most honest summary.
The full distribution, or at least quartiles. Shape carries the information.
Attainment against territory potential, plotted as a scatter. The vertical spread is performance; the horizontal spread is design.
Attainment by tenure cohort, so ramping sellers are not averaged with fully ramped ones.
Diagnosing a wide spread
Check potential dispersion across territories first. If potential varies threefold, so will attainment, and no coaching addresses that.
Check the target derivation. Quotas derived from prior attainment carry forward the previous imbalance and compound it each year.
Check tenure. A spread driven by ramping sellers is a hiring-schedule artefact, not a performance finding.
Only then look at individual performance, on the residual after the first three are accounted for.
What it cannot tell you
Nothing about the quality of the revenue — attainment made up of heavily discounted deals counts the same.
Nothing absolute, since it is a ratio to a number someone chose. Raising targets lowers attainment without anything changing on the ground.
Nothing about timing within the period, which is where compensation structure exerts most of its influence.
RELATED TERMS
Capacity Planning
Translating a revenue target into the number of productive selling resources required to hit it, accounting for ramp, attrition and expected attainment.
Ramp Time
The time between a seller starting and reaching expected productivity. The variable that makes hiring plans wrong when it is guessed rather than measured.
Quota
The revenue target assigned to an individual rep for a period. The most consequential number in a seller's working life, and the mechanism translating a company target into individual accountability.
COMMON QUESTIONS
- What is a healthy quota attainment distribution?
- A concentration around target with a modest tail either side. A wide spread, or a bimodal shape, usually indicates a territory or quota design problem before it indicates a talent problem.
- Why is average attainment misleading?
- Because a few large overachievers can carry the average while most of the team misses. The share of sellers at or above target is a more honest summary than the mean.
- Does low attainment mean the team is underperforming?
- Not necessarily. Attainment is actual over target, so it falls when targets rise faster than capacity. Check the target derivation before concluding anything about the sellers.
- How does territory design affect attainment?
- Directly. Where territories differ materially in potential, attainment differences partly measure the map rather than the seller — which is why potential dispersion should be checked before attainment is used to rank anyone.
