Ramp Time
The time between a seller starting and reaching expected productivity. The variable that makes hiring plans wrong when it is guessed rather than measured.
Measuring it honestly
From start date to sustained productivity at target. The word doing the work is sustained: a rep who hits target once in month five on an inherited deal has not ramped.
The floor nobody can beat
Why omitting it breaks capacity plans
Start from the revenue target, not from a headcount someone has in mind.
Divide by median attainment per fully ramped rep — median, not target.
Apply ramp: a hire starting in month four contributes only the fraction of the year after they ramp.
Apply attrition from your own historical rate.
Convert to a hiring schedule, then check recruiting can actually deliver it.
What actually shortens it
Inherited pipeline, which removes the first-cycle wait entirely — the largest single lever available.
A territory with real potential. A rep in a weak territory ramps slowly no matter how good the enablement.
Enablement measured on time-to-first-deal rather than on sessions delivered.
Fewer products at once. Breadth extends ramp for a benefit that arrives later.
RELATED TERMS
Capacity Planning
Translating a revenue target into the number of productive selling resources required to hit it, accounting for ramp, attrition and expected attainment.
Quota
The revenue target assigned to an individual rep for a period. The most consequential number in a seller's working life, and the mechanism translating a company target into individual accountability.
Quota Attainment
The proportion of quota a rep achieved, and across a team, the distribution of that proportion.
COMMON QUESTIONS
- How do you measure ramp time?
- From start date to sustained attainment at target — sustained, not first achieved. Measure it from your own hire cohorts rather than assuming a convention.
- Why does ramp time matter for planning?
- Because a rep hired in month four contributes a fraction of a year's capacity. Planning on fully ramped headcount overstates delivery for most of the year, which is the single most common capacity-planning error.
- What affects ramp time?
- Deal cycle length sets the floor — nobody ramps faster than one full cycle. Beyond that: enablement quality, territory quality, and whether pipeline is inherited or built from scratch.
- Should ramping reps carry quota?
- A ramped quota, stated explicitly rather than applied as informal allowance. An unstated allowance makes attainment data uninterpretable across the team.
