Account Executive (AE)
The closing role carrying a revenue number, responsible for working opportunities from qualification to signature.
What the role owns
Qualification depth, stakeholder coverage, the commercial negotiation and forecast accuracy. In most organisations the AE's forecast call is a primary input to company planning, which makes calibration part of the job rather than a nicety.
Pipeline ownership is ambiguous by default
How to set the role up to succeed
Decide the self-sourced pipeline expectation explicitly and compensate for it. Where SDRs create pipeline and AEs close it, self-sourced work is frequently expected and never rewarded.
Set quota from territory potential rather than uniformly. Equal quotas across unequal territories produce performance rankings that measure the assignment.
Define stage exit criteria so forecast calls are based on evidence rather than confidence. The AE's forecast is the organisation's forecast at the point it matters.
Track contacts engaged per opportunity. Single-threading is the most reliable predictor of a deal disappearing, and it is visible early.
Review lost deals with the AE against a framework rather than in general. General loss reviews produce general lessons.
Where it goes wrong
Pipeline ownership is ambiguous by default, and the ambiguity surfaces as a compensation dispute at the worst possible time.
AE performance comparisons are dominated by territory quality, so rankings frequently measure the assignment rather than the person.
Quota set from a top-down target rather than from territory potential produces a plan that requires the best rep to carry the team.
Forecast accuracy is treated as a discipline problem when it is usually a stage-definition problem.
RELATED TERMS
Discovery Call
The conversation in which a seller establishes whether a real problem exists, who owns it, and what solving it is worth.
Forecast Accuracy
How closely forecasts match actual results, measured consistently over time. The metric that separates disciplined forecasting from lucky forecasting.
Multi-Threading
Building relationships with several stakeholders in a buying account rather than relying on one contact.
Quota
The revenue target assigned to an individual rep for a period. The most consequential number in a seller's working life, and the mechanism translating a company target into individual accountability.
Quota Attainment
The proportion of quota a rep achieved, and across a team, the distribution of that proportion.
Sales Development Representative (SDR)
The role responsible for creating qualified pipeline through prospecting, rather than closing it.
COMMON QUESTIONS
- What does an account executive do?
- Carries a revenue number and works opportunities from qualification through to signature: discovery, stakeholder coverage, commercial negotiation and forecasting. In most organisations the AE's forecast is the organisation's forecast, which makes forecast discipline a core part of the role rather than an administrative one.
- What is the difference between an AE and an SDR?
- An SDR creates pipeline — prospecting, qualifying and booking meetings — and an AE works and closes it. The boundary is a frequent source of friction, particularly over self-sourced pipeline, which AEs are often expected to generate and rarely explicitly compensated for.
- How should AE performance be measured?
- Against territory potential rather than against each other. Territory quality varies more than rep quality in most organisations, so a raw attainment ranking frequently reports the assignment rather than the person. Pair attainment with pipeline generation and forecast accuracy for a fuller read.
- What predicts whether an AE's deal will close?
- Contacts engaged per opportunity, more reliably than most stage-based signals. Single-threaded deals are one job change away from restarting, and champion departure is the most common cause of a forecast deal disappearing. It is measurable early, which is what makes it useful.
